Changes

There are those who say that East and West are different worlds but I find them so similar that I have had no problem in transferring. Housing was pretty in the UK and I loved my interior, seen below around 1991 when I was considerably thinner. The major shopping centres also had their own charm and provided virtually everything a person could need.
But how has that changed in the Philippines? After all they also have housing, to various standards, I am pleased that our city house is rather different to these Manila slums, but it serves exactly the same purpose of providing shelter and, albeit with a certain amount of searching, one can get everything in the shops of the Phils; with the possible sad exception of good crunchy pickled onions. In fact it seems that one can even buy things that I consider best avoided if the name of this shop below (The Athlete's Foot) in the Ayala Mall in Cebu is to be believed. Having occasionally suffered I cannot imagine anyone even considering buying such a fungal infection.
There are other advantages, at least here I get no complaints for driving a big 4x4, since these vehicles are obviously designed for the type of driving that is necessary in this country.
I do admit that I miss my Panther but since it is quite a number of years I have grown used to the sorrow of losing it and in fact I think it is probably unlikely that I would drive as I always did in UK, with the hood down, in view of the heat. So long as one kept moving then even in rain the wet just flew over one's head. In fact I told my then quite young daughter that you needed written permission from the makers to drive with the roof up unless it was below zero.
